On December 25, 1938, in the home that lawyer Otto Halpert shared with his wife Hertha and their three daughters at Eichendorffstraẞe 32/34 (Sokola Street), the eighth candle was lit on the traditional candelabrum known as the hanukkiah to mark the last day of the holiday of Hanukkah. One of the family members took this photo as a memento. That year, holiday celebrations at the Halpert home must have been marked by an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty. Just a month and a half earlier, in November, the Nazis had carried out an anti-Semitic pogrom throughout Germany, deepening the isolation of Jews from the rest of society.
