“Arbeit ist des Bürgers Zierde” – “Work’s the burgher’s decoration”. This motto, taken from Friedrich Schiller’s poem, is featured on the “Ehrenbürgerurkunde”, or Certificate of Honorary Citizenship awarded to Wilhelm Salomon Freund in recognition of his decades of service as a longtime member and chairman of the Breslau City Council its. Freund was the first Jew in Breslau to hold the post, and the second to receive this honor. Freund specialized in commercial law and represented wealthy clients, among them the largest landowner in Silesia, Prince Hatzfeld. He also served as the president of the Jewish community in Breslau and represented the city as a member of the Prussian parliament in Berlin on behalf of the German Progress Party.
