Etrog box, beginning of the 20th c.

An etrog box is used during Sukkot, the holiday which commemorates the Jews living in huts as they fled from Egypt. Benno Sklarz, the owner of a kosher dairy store in Breslau, crafted this box which his son, Salo, took with him when he fled with his family from Breslau to London in 1939. His grandson, Benjamin, later brought the container to Israel on his emigration in 1969. The box, which is decorated with a real dried etrog (a type of citrus) on the lid, is used to this day by Benno’s descendants living in Israel, to transport the fruit during the celebration of the Sukkot holiday.
