Heinrich Tischler, Self-portrait, 1937.

Nicholas Tischler, Cambridge, UK

Heinrich Tischler, a painter and architect who graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Breslau, was a representative of Jewish Expressionism. He created emotional scenes depicting Jews immersed in fervent prayer, as well as surreal scenes of the suburbs of Breslau. In numerous self-portraits, he depicted himself with an ironic expression and a cigarillo in his mouth. Among his personal belongings, an empty box once holding his favorite cigarillos has been preserved.
