Ice skaters in Breslau, winter 1940/1941.

Daniel Ljunggren, Sweden

This photo of ice skaters on the frozen moat that runs along Wallstraße (Pawła Włodkowica Street) was taken in the winter of 1940-41 by Albert Hadda from the window of his apartment in Nikolai Stadtgraben 16 (Podwale Street). Was the photograph just a practice shot to test a new camera, or maybe an expression of something else? From the mid-1930s, the authorities gradually banned Jews from visiting parks and beaches, practicing sports, and engaging in other forms of recreation in public places.
